Giant-Sized X-Men 50th Anniversary Jam Poster

$

If any image deserved the monicker "Giant-Size", surely it is this incredible poster jam featuring the X-Men!

Drawn by many classic artists throughout X-Men history, many of my favorites:

  • Walter Simonson (on the upper left) with X-Factor
  • Neal Adams (upper middle) with his Silver Age team, including Havok
  • Art Adams drawing the New Mutants from that classic Special Edition
  • Chris Bachalo with Generation X
  • Stuart Immonen drawing the original blue and yellow uniforms on the lower right
  • Even Joe Mad and While Portacio
Great poster!  Would love to have had John Byrne or Jim Lee draw something here, but given the circumstances I can see why they are not included.  Anyone know when it will be sold on retail?  I've been searching and cannot find it for sale yet.  Nuff Said!

Nick Fury Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. 6 cover recreation by Steranko

We all remember this classic cover to Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #6 by Jim Steranko...

The first issue with only a cover and with the interiors done by other creators, sob!  Still this became an iconic cover, was homaged by Superman once, and I think it was also a poster.  I loved the design and execution of it.

Steranko did a recreation of this cover, sans the logo and stuff, in the 1980s according to The Drawings of Steranko.  The recreation is cool, especially for the coloring, but somehow I prefer the original cover.  How about you?  Nuff Said!

X-Men Battle of the Atom original art covers by Art Adams

The Battle of the Atom mini-series ended last year, which seemed to be an excessive crossover for me.  But it had some great artwork, most notably the covers by Art Adams.  Here are three of them in the original pen and ink versions.

X-Men Battle of the Atom #3 featured this great cover with young Jean Grey and Scott Summers on the run.  I love, love, love how this looks in black and white.  The costumes look nice and the circle/line perspective really draws your attention to the characters.

Battle of the Atom #4 featured Magneto as he threatens the younger X-Men.  Who doesn't like a Magneto pose?  Rogue is standing next to him, too.

The first issue had this dramatic collage of old and new teams with the threat of the Sentinels in the background.  The Angel looks majestic the way that Adams draws him here.  Nuff Said!

Fantastic Four homage cover by Art Adams

I haven't read Fantastic Four regularly since Mark Waid left, so I was a bit startled to come across this 2010 cover that Art Adams produced for the 600th issue.

Featuring both the FF and the Inhumans racing off to fight an unseen foe!  I immediately recognized the source and appreciated the homage.

The original pen and ink version of Art Adams cover features delicate line work as always.

Of course the homage is to Jack Kirby's famous FF #82 cover featuring the Inhumans, back in 1986!  One of my favorites.  Nuff Said!

Two visions of Galactus, one a classic, the other retro cool!

I believe this illustration was done for a portfolio?  I can't quite remember now, but I remember first seeing it in a Jack Kirby treasury of his larger pieces.

They first met in Iron Fist #15 in 1977 and their first skirmish was a brief one.  We never got to see the K'un L'un kid unleash his weapon on Wolverine.

A brilliant commission by Lee Weeks.  Nuff Said!

Neal Adams did this nifty commission for a fan, featuring the silver age version of the Angel attacking a Sentinel!

What do these four 1975 Marvel debut issues have in common?

What do these 4 Marvel titles have in common?  They are seemingly random and unrelated save for one fact: they all debuted with an October 1975 cover date, which have appeared on newsstands in July 1975.

They were all green lighted during a lunch in 1975 with Len Wein, Tony Isabella and others.  Wein was given a mandate to expand the current Marvel line by 4 titles.  The story is told in this week's Nerdist Writers Panel Comics Edition podcast by Wein and Isabella - I highly recommend this particularly podcast to any Marvel fan.  Their memories are a bit shaky; Isabella remembers two of the titles being Black Goliath and Tigra as well.  However, I believe it is the above four as they came out during the same month and Goliath / Tigra appeared in 1976.

The funny thing is that when the green light for the four titles were given, John Verpooten immediately told Isabella he was behind the deadline!  Nuff Said.

The Mark of Gil Kane: Captain Marvel and Black Bolt, together!

I've always loved Gil Kane's renditions of both Captain Marvel and Black Bolt from the Inhumans.  A few weeks ago I noticed the original cover art for Captain Marvel #53 (1977) which featured both of these characters together!

Original cover art by Gil Kane, inks by Frank Giacoia and/or Esposito.  Pretty much two characters in flight, it must have taken Kane less than half a day to execute this one?

With the color it really pops as Black Bolt's all blue outfit stands out next to Marvell's mostly red tights.  Nuff Said.

I recently saw this on Joe Jusko's Facebook page...

A staggering commission done by Big John Buscema!  Nearly every character he worked on during his tenure at Marvel:  Conan (with Belit and Red Sonja), Silver Surfer, The Avengers, The Fantastic Four, Thor, and many many more.  What lucky fan got this original to hang on their wall?  I'm envious.  Nuff Said!

Shades of Jack Kirby!  Steve Rude captures this battle perfectly between the Surfer and the Super Skrull.

I have abandoned this site mostly for Tumblr these days -- seems natural as this blog was always about images.  But the above image just had to be added here for my Surfer collection.  Nuff Said.

When I started this blog years ago I spent a lot of time finding images, rare commissions, old magazine covers, etc.  I joined the Tumblr party this year - late to everything as usual - but I see so much fun stuff on there it's addictive.

This John Buscema commission is a wonderful piece of work.  Featuring the Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four, Conan, Red Sonja, Thor, the Vision, various Avengers and X-Men.  From the signature it was done around 1998.  Nuff Said.

I remember seeing this in the 1970s, but not where it appeared: the Marvel Universe stars from that era by John Byrne.

Hard to place the year as Omega the Unknown is there--he debuted in 1976 along with Nova.  Yet the original X-Men are there and not the new X-Men.  Was it a poster?  A Marvel Age thing or a house ad?  Perhaps you know!  Nuff Said.
